Healthy Cows
Bohanan Farm works with Dr. Jadene Patch from Plainfield to keep our animals healthy. Dr. Patch comes once a month to evaluate the cattle. Most of what she does is reproductive work. She checks the cows to see if they are pregnant and if the cow is carrying a healthy calf. This is done with ultrasound equipment. Dr. Patch also works with us designing vaccination programs and cow treatment protocols. She is also available for emergency help and advice. The most important part of herd health is preventive maintenance. Dr. Patch plays an important role in this along with our nutritionist, and employees. A good preventive care program keeps health problems to a minimum.
Our Cow’s Diet
We are very picky about what our cows eat. The girls eat a more nutritious and balanced diet than we do! We have a nutritionist that we work with on a regular basis, he visits the farm about every three weeks. Tom’s job is to make a feed recipe that balances the feed we grow with the feeds we can buy. We grow grass and corn. Both of these are harvested as silage. That means that the whole plant is chopped into little pieces, about ½ an inch long and then fermented to preserve it. We pack the feed into long concrete silos to store it. This makes up about 50% of what the milk cows eat. We send samples of our grass and corn silage to a laboratory in Maryland to have it analyzed for protein, energy, and mineral content. It is then Tom our nutritionist’s job to balance the feed with purchased grains and minerals to meet the cows needs. Is Contoocook Creamery milk antibiotic free? Yes. We do use antibiotics from time to time to save a sick cow. When we do treat a cow she is moved to a designated pen and her milk is thrown away. We work closely with our herd veterinarian to develop protocols and milk withdrawal periods for the antibiotics we use. The treated cow’s milk is tested free of antibiotic residues before her milk is used again. We also test every load of milk that we process for antibiotic residues just to make sure no mistakes have been made. Is Contoocook Creamery milk growth hormone free? Yes. Our cows do not receive rBST/BGH (bovine growth hormone). Is Contoocook Creamery milk pasteurized? Yes. Our milk is pasteurized and homogenized. What do the cows eat? We work closely with a cow nutritionist to balance our cows’ diet. Our cows are reproducing their own weight in milk every three weeks! In order to keep them healthy and happy we pay close attention to what they eat. We grow three hundred acres of grass and about one hundred fifty acres of corn.
