Our Story

Contoocook Creamery at Bohanan Farm strives to produce milk of the highest quality to provide you and your family with a fresh, wholesome, and local product by utilizing the most efficient and environmentally sound practices available.

The fifth generation of family members are proud to take on the responsibility of caring for the cows and the land at Bohanan farm. The photos below from top left to bottom right show: the 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Generations of Bohanan Farm.

In 1907 Lester Bohanan bought a farm on the banks of the Contoocook River in Contoocook, NH. We, the third, fourth, and fifth generations of Lester’s family are still farming the same land.

Bohanan Farm has grown and changed through the generations. The farm now consists of more than 440 acres of land and is home to 200 milk cows, producing more than 23,000 eight ounce servings of milk every day.

When the wholesale milk price crashed in 2009, we knew that if we wanted to keep the farm alive, we’d need to change our strategy. After much thought and research, we launched Contoocook Creamery, a small business where we make and market our products ourselves rather than just wholesale our milk to a large company. Contoocook Creamery makes cheese, butter, and glass-bottled milk made exclusively from Bohanan Farm cows.

Even though we have a new small business, we haven’t strayed from our old values: To be a modern dairy farm that produces milk of the highest quality with the most efficient and environmentally sound practices available. The well-being of our cows is the most important quality of Bohanan Farm. It takes happy, healthy cows to produce the high-quality milk that we take so much pride in.
